Falk’s grave

Up at Svedmon on Hökensås in the cross between the old country road and Gothenburg road there is the Falks execution site, marked with stones and a cross.

On the night of 22/23 August 1854, Jonas Falk and Ander Frid held up and robbed the mail coach between Jönköping and Falköpng. Falk shot the driver dead and Frid knocked the post boy to the ground. The robbers made off with almost 2000 riksdaler, fleeing via Hjo across Lake Vättern to Stockholm, but were soon apprehended. Frid was sentenced to death but was later reprieved and sentenced to life imprisonment instead. Falk was sentenced to death by beheading, and the execution was carried out at Svedmon in 1855. The site is now marked with stones and an iron cross, and the grave is usually decorated with flowers, though no one knows for sure how they get there…
